Sometimes happiness is knowing at the end of the day there will be wine.
And good wine at that. Without even looking at the map we can tell we’re closing in on the Chilean border, because Chilean wines are appearing in even the small tiendas. After the disappointment with Peruvian wines we are really looking forward to Chile and Argentina.
Today we turned off the coast and headed inland back into the mountains. As we passed through the last town for the day we picked up a bottle of Chilean Cabernet to celebrate completing this coastal segment, which was challenging in ways we had not imagined.
With sunset approaching, we found a camp spot atop a knoll off the highway. We laid out the blanket and watched the sun dip behind the mountains while drinking red wine from our plastic camp cups. It was the best wine we’ve had since we can’t remember when.
As the day and our bottle approached its end, we both remarked that we think we’re really going to like Chile and Argentina.
