The altiplano, the high tableland of central South America, is beautifully bleak. The altiplano is where the Andes are at their widest. It is the most extensive area of high plateau on Earth outside of Tibet.
We have been above 14,000 feet for over two days. We’re feeling pretty good considering the lack of oxygen up here. We never could have sustained this elevation a month ago. I would have been passed out on the side of the road.
While we act like this is some kind of feat (Yeah us!), we rode by a few houses and an outpost today. People live up here. This is their normal.
We spent the afternoon trying to outrun the clouds that were chasing us from behind. After yesterday, we know what they’re carrying in their dark billows. We were successful, save for some snow flurries. Yep, snow flurries. In Peru, anything is possible.
