It is not often that you get a personal tour by an expert who wrote The Book on a subject so we felt extremely lucky to get a personal tour of the Parque Arqueológico by David Dellenback. The area forms a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
David, a high school friend of Ric, spent more than thirty years hunting down, documenting, and sketching the statues from the valley of San Agustín and the adjoining areas. He recently published an authoritative compilation of his sketches and findings, The Statues of the Pueblo Escultor.
Little is known about the people that carved the statues and their stone sculptures (which range in height from approximately 1m to 4m) are open to interpretation.
The statues were originally all underground. Since being exposed to the elements they have begun to degrade. All of the statues have been moved from their original locations, though some are still in the same general vicinity. All are unique.
