Today’s roadside find…..safety orange stickers! Never mind that they say 10W30. I ride a black bike with black panniers. I’m like a rolling ninja. During the day, Scott has commended that from afar, I tend to blend in with the pavement.
Visibility has always been a concern. When I started I had a black helmet and two of my three shirts were dark colors. I’ve since had to replace my helmet and I try to wear bright colored tops. Along the way, I also picked up two orange flags that were on the side of the road and put them through the straps on my rear panniers. The panniers have reflector material and I added a red reflective strip to my mudguards, so I light up like a Christmas tree at night when lights shine on the bike. Safety orange stickers are the perfect fix to my daytime visibility problems. A slick road surprise indeed!
While in Costa Rica I saw someone riding a bicycle painted safety orange. There’s a reason why they have prisoners wear orange jumpsuits. You can see them a mile away! We’ve been very happy with our Surly bikes and Arkel panniers, but if there’s one suggestion I would make, it’s make the option of safety orange a standard color. They wouldn’t win any beauty contests, but there’d be no question about drivers being able to see them on the road.
The downside to all this bright orange on my bike, it makes stealth camping problematic. Trying to hide my bike is like hiding an elephant wearing a pink tutu.
