It must have been the Mayan trickster gods’ turn to leave the road surprises. We’ve been really lucky in some of our edible finds: candy, vegetables, and fruit. Today we came across several patches of oranges. Most were crushed or broken open. Not all of them were good finds.
It was blazing hot again and the taste of hot water from a plastic bike bottle was hard to choke down. I’m not ashamed to say I used the five second rule (I prefer to count using the geological time scale when it comes to food I happen to find on the ground) when picking up surviving slices of mandarin oranges off of the pavement, and popping them into my mouth. They were a welcome change from hot water flavored with a hint of bpa. Besides the open fruit, we managed to find a few whole ones along the way.
Some of the surviving oranges were a bit fermented and past the stage of being edible. One or two I opened had worms of some sort. Luckily, I never found half a worm, but like the blackberries we shoved in our maws by the handful, I’m sure I received an inadvertent protein boost that day. It’s not the first time we’ve consumed insects on this trip.
While I’m relating some of the grittier sides of bicycle touring, let me expand on avoiding that not so fresh feeling. Being hot and sweaty all day tends to attract a lot of road dust as well as diesel and other vehicle particulates. Add a layer of sunscreen, which we wear most days, and we are dirt magnets. If we’re camping and can’t find a river or stream to cool off and clean up in during the day we use some type of moist wipes to clean up. I am amazed at the grime that shows up on the disposable towels. I dread what is happening to our lungs.
We’ve become somewhat of experts on baby wipes, which are cheap and can be found even in the smallest store. Our favorite brand is produced in Mexico, called Dody’s Dermo Active. They’re strong and don’t seem to roll up when wiping, even over my wookie fur. Huggies Original Wipes, on the other hand, suck. They dry out fast and rip easily. They definitely were not made with a big baby like me in mind.
