A benefit of all the cold weather and polar vortices in the States is it has folks looking south for some sun. My Mom sent me a note when we were in Antigua saying that she had it with the cold and wanted to come visit us in Guatemala. Perfect timing because we’d be in Antigua for a few weeks. The only problem, Mom’s passport was issued back when she went to Europe on her honeymoon….in the 70s. Nixon was in office the last time my Mom needed a passport. Ma, it’s time to renew your passport.
Two days ago I got an email saying her new passport had arrived! We took the day off today in Choluteca, Honduras to plan her and Orson’s visit; book the flights, rent the car, and figure out where we’ll leave the bikes while they’re here. They fly into San Jose, Costa Rica on March 24th. We’re 2 countries and 380 miles away. Our plan is to ride to Puntarenas, leave the bikes with a WarmShowers host, and take a bus to San Jose. They’re visiting for 10 days. Mom wants beaches. Orson wants to fish. I’m thinking about a few days on the Caribbean and Pacific coasts (the Cahuita area and Manuel Antonio, respectively).
And that’s about as far as I got. We’re armed with electronic copies of Rough Guide Central America, Lonely Planet Costa Rica, and two Frommer’s guidebooks. I’ll do some research while we’re out on the road until the next time we have wi-fi.
