WanderWheels has received much unsolicited advice surrounding our safety on the road, especially as we head into Mexico. Namely this has come down to
You should carry a gun
With our safety in mind, we decided to consult the experts and ampersand enthusiasts at J&S Surplus & Outdoor Store “Camping, Survival, Paintball & Airsoft Headquarters”
Walking into the store, I could tell that I was in good hands solely based on knife hanging from the clerk’s belt. First, it was a bowie¹ knife (which screams Mexican resistance) and second, it was the size of a machete (from Spanish, “macho hammer”).
How could I not follow the advice of a Macho Hammer Man, unafraid of Mexican invaders threatening the USA’s southern border?
After discussing our particular needs, we were shown a variety of weapons including those carried by the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, blow guns, tasers, and of course, bowie knives.
These were all viable options. However, it wasn’t until I toured the outside of the shop that I found the solution to our security.
Sleep well readers, WanderWheels is now towing a cannon.
¹The bowie knife is named after Jim Bowie (or his brother Rezin) who designed the long knife, with the blade double edged at the point. In the early 19th century, he was a U.S. settler who opposed Mexican Rule in Texas. He shared command of the garrison that resisted the Mexican attack on the Alamo. He died during that battle (1836).
