The day off yesterday did us good because we had a hilly ride this morning through the mountains. Completing our inland tour through the Redwoods, we’ve turned onto Route 1 headed for the coast again. The hills and dense forest prevented us from seeing far but the salty smell of sea air told us we were close. We climbed over one last hill and then the road took a sharp left as it ran out of land, teetering on the coastline edge as it heads south.
Worried about the holiday weekend traffic, we had an early start today. We arrived at the campground shortly after 2pm, one of our earlier days. We picked up a bottle of wine at the town’s small gas station/grocery store. We’ve been pleasantly surprised by how CHEAP the wine is! Makes sense, considering it doesn’t have very far to travel. It helps take the sting off how EXPENSIVE everything else is here in California! We’re entertained by the impressive variety of wine found at even the smallest of grocers. Unfortunately this grocery’s food stocks pale in comparison to its wine, so tonight our wine is paired with sausages and mac & cheese.
