We’re taking a day off in Hood River, Oregon on our tour of the Columbia River Gorge. We spent the morning hanging out on the river watching the windsurfers and kiteboarders tear it up. Hood River is a premier location for wind-water sports. There’s often an inverse relationship between how much fun they’re having on the water and how much fun we’re having on the road. They love wind. We have a more tenuous relationship with the wind.
We grabbed some lunch at the Big Horse Brewery. I ordered the smoked salmon BLT sandwich, a perfect pairing of land and sea nestled between two lightly buttered toasted buns – Yum!
The town of Hood River is built into a hill and from our perch above at the Big Horse Brewery we spotted the Naked Winery tasting room below.
“Anything worth doing is worth doing naked” – I’m not sure who said this, but I like their enthusiasm.
Naked Winery is a must go when visiting Hood River. This is by far our favorite tasting room so far. The wine is delicious, atmosphere is relaxed and fun, and the staff informative.
We were assisted by Aaron Sales, who is awesome and informs us on everything from their grapes to the history of kiteboarding, which apparently is the love child from a ménages à trois of a surfer, snowboarder and skier. They also have a line, Outdoor Vino, with plastic packaging and screw tops making it very bike tour friendly. We rolled away with multiple bottles stuffed into our panniers, and a complimentary bottle which fit conveniently in a water bottle cage. Naked Winery is WanderWheels approved.
