A special thanks to Stef & Wes for a thoroughly enjoyable evening. They hosted us last night after we contacted them through Warm Showers. Stef made a delicious pasta dinner that we can’t wait to recreate on the road.
Stef & Wes met while working at Los Alamos National Laboratory. I also worked at the Lab and Sarah interned in Santa Fe while we were both in graduate school. I wonder how many times we passed each other in town? A missed opportunity to make friends! We shared enthusiasm for all things outdoors, including bicycle touring.
This is the second couple we’ve met recently where our work lives overlapped but never had the chance to meet. Anne and Sarah were at the NIH at the same time while she was in school but never crossed paths while there.
How many other missed opportunities have there been?
Thanks again to Stef, Wes, Isabella and Oliver for providing just what a couple of cyclo-tourists needed.
Not ready to leave civilization yet, we had contacted Molly, about a week prior. Unfortunately, Norovirus was ravaging the area, including the Teton and Yellowstone National Parks. Molly had fallen ill the day we were to arrive at her house. Going out of her way, she arranged for us to stay with Walter in the nearby town of Wilson.
Walter was not going to be home that evening, but he left his house unlocked for us.
Thank you Walter & Molly!
Consider for a moment how extraordinary this chain of events was. Molly, who we had never met agreed to host us for the evening. Circumstances changed and she went out of her way, while sick, for two strangers to arrange a place to stay with a third party. The third party, who knows little to nothing about us, leaves his house unlocked and gives us run of the castle.
There is a tremendous amount of trust and goodwill involved, contrary to the culture of fear that seems pervasive.
From a very young age onwards I was bombarded with the message “Fear Everyone”
- Schools teaching “Stranger Danger”
- Cartoons like Super Friends, G.I. Joe, etc. with public service announcements like “If someone touches you where your bathing suit covers, tell a responsible adult”
- Very odd “Different Strokes” episodes called “The Bicycle Man” parts 1 & 2
- President Reagan’s “Evil Empire” and the end of the Cold War
