We finally rolled out at 10am after being wooed by Austin for 5 days. We love this place and were a little sad to leave but it was made easier because we took a piece of Austin with us. Our friend Rich will be riding with us until next Sunday. Rich has been on two other short bike tours with us. It will be fun to have a third person along. I think Scott is already tired of my endless yammering. He says he can’t hear me because of the wind, but I think he’s ignoring me.
We weighed our gear and bikes while in Austin. I am carrying 54lbs of gear and Scott is carrying 71lbs. Scott’s bike weighs 39lbs while mine weighs in at 36lbs. So in total the bikes weigh 90-110+ pounds. That’s without water and fuel which adds a few more pounds to each bike. We didn’t get around to weighing our gear in Houston, so Scott was nervous while we were weighing the bags because he was going to be really embarrassed if I was carrying more weight than him. However, by percentage of body weight I am carrying 5% more than him.
For comparison, my old roadbike weighed 20-25lbs. When most cyclists think about shaving weight off their bike they think in ounces. We think in kilos. We searched our bags for items that could be left in Austin. The only things we came up with were a tripod and a book, both of which came out of Scott’s bags (I’m not exactly sure how they made it into the bags to start with). We almost left our down jackets behind, but the cool rainy weather has scared us into keeping them. The lows are supposed to get into the 40s this week. Brrr!!
People say some crazy, funny stuff to us sometimes. Today a man in a minivan asked if we had just robbed a bank. Why yes sir, these are the new vehicles of choice for those trying to escape the law. What?!
A big THANK YOU to the folks at Wimberly EMS for letting us camp in their backyard and use the showers and washer/dryer!
