We made it to Austin and we’re hanging out at our friend Rich’s house until Monday morning when we head out again. We spent the morning appreciating things like a bed, indoor plumbing and heating, a roof, etc.
Our diets have been lacking in fresh fruits and vegetables over the past few days so I put together this wicked awesome salad. The 1lb of peppered bacon is what makes it both wicked and awesome. Otherwise, it’s just a salad.
Later in the evening we went out with Rich on the weekly Thursday Night Social Ride.
My experience with biking groups are spandex and peloton draft lines. Tonight is more social than ride. To start, it’s a BYOB event. About 200 people meet at a park on their bikes, socialize over a few beers, and then at some point a horn blows signaling the start of the ride, to which we ride to another park and the process starts all over again, ultimately ending at a bar where we are served FREE beer. There are all manner of bikes, pimped out with a variety of lights and sound systems. We meander through the city like an amorphous blinking blob. In a place that prides itself in being weird, nothing is more normal than a giant herd of cyclists roaming about the city on a Thursday night.
At one point I turn to Scott and yell above the symphony of bike bells, “I LOVE THIS!”. This being more than just this bike ride. This being our new life, with all its random, spontaneous, unexpected events.
